Electric guitars were originally developed by guitar makers in the early 1930s, because of the growing need to amplify the guitar in performances of big bands and jazz orchestras. The earliest documented use of those Electric Guitars in performance was in October 1932 and the first recording of an electric guitar was made in 1938 by George Barnes.

In 1946 Leo Fender, was able to design the first model of commercially successful solid body "future" Electric Guitars. Those electric guitars were named the Esquire and represented the departure from the hollow body Electric Guitars and became popular between Country Western artists. By the 1960s, guitarists began distorting the sound of their electric guitars by inserting an effects box in its signal path.

Electric guitar effect boxes later became as much a part of the instrument as the Electric Guitars themselves. From 1980s and 1990s, high quality digital effects became capable of replicating the analog effects previously used by attempting to model the sound produced by analog effects and tube amps.

The revolution of electric guitars continue with the recent announcement of the first completely digital guitar by Gibson. The signal of their Digital electric guitars is delivered over a standard Ethernet cable, eliminating the cable induced line noise. The new Digital Electric Guitars also provide independent signal processing for each individual string.

Electric Guitars are manufactured in Solid Body, Hollow Body, Semi-Hollow Body and Acoustic-Electric guitar types.
